Generally, enthusiasts like many different types of cars, but if you had to pick one model as your favorite, what would it be ?

Unsurprisingly, my choice is the S class, my reason being that they have superior build quality and materials, have great power across the range and generally fly under the radar.

My soft spot is E-Class wagons. I find these to be the most beautiful and cohesive designs in mainstream cars. Plus they’re quick, efficient, and very well made...and pricey:

Full-size Chevy Trucks would be my choice (I’d say Silverado, but that would limit me to just post-1999)

I love how it’s formula has a stayed simple through the years. Pushrod V8, rear or four wheel drive, a box frame, rear leaf springs, and a simple automatic or manual. I also love that they can be bare bones basic or uber luxurious. Plus I can’t think of a single generation that looks bad. My favorite would be the GMT800 generation though.

It has a powertrain hand-built to juice the most horsepower possible, and yet it can still withstand over 1,000 horsepower without a sweat. It was built as the ultimate numbers car. With a twin-turbo V6, coupled with advanced electronics and stability systems, it will spank the world’s best around any race track and still go pick up some groceries afterwards.

I know it’s not technically a “kind of car”, but the only way I can describe it is sleepers. ‘94-96 Impala Syclone Typhoon Marauder Range-topper GM trucks SparkEV mine SHO Taurus Cobalt/HHR/Malibu/Malibu Maxx SS All V Caddies (though those aren’t so sleeper-y anymore) 1M/135i Msport (either is good)...

But you get the picture. Anything with large/potentially large amounts of power where no ordinary person would think to put it. I also must confess a bias towards GM, but you should have figured that out by now.

If you made me pick a segment, I'd say small pickups, but I think this defines my interests better.

American muscle cars. Specifically, the 1969 Dodge Charger. I have loved this car since my childhood. Extremely aggressive looks. It’s flawless from any angle to me. The earth trembling sound that comes from any of the massive V8s that it came with. This is the first car I got when I started earning real money and have been restoring her ever since.

If I was to chose only one kind of car I’d say minivan. They just do everything well - jack of all trades, albeit master of none. Car-like to drive, plenty of headroom, lots of cargo space. I currently have a Mazda5 6MT that I will never get rid of; I may buy other vehicles, but they will be to supplement, not supplant, the Mazda.

The other type of vehicle that I like to have in my fleet is a mid-size luxury sedan of some sort, preferably with a manual transmission if possible. My next vehicle will probably be an E39 530i. It has sufficient room for four (if I’m driving I don’t need S-Class/7-series space), more than sufficient power (I prefer I6s over V8s), and is tossable enough to make back road driving enjoyable.

I am forever ruined by the Lotus Elise. I think if it was legal in the states I would get the V6 Exige and daily drive the hell out of it.

The handling on the Elise was superb and more responsive than anything I have ever driven. I have never felt more connected to a vehicle than that one.

So for a more vauge answer, a car that turns heads, pure handling, and fast.

“I come from a family that isn’t a car family (my father’s never wrenched on a single one of his own trucks)“

Heh, that’s not always terribly meaningful. My dad used to fix his own car when necessary, but he was never particularly interested in cars in any conventional sense.

Then again, when I mentioned reverse DAF racing to him, he said ‘oh yes, I used to have one of those, I changed the belts on the CVT in my parents’ driveway’. (!) Seems he is some kind of Jalop, but keeps it very well hidden.

That’s actually bad ass haha! I wish my dad was a secret jalop! You’re right that it doesn’t mean much, but he’s just not into any cars any which way. If the truck can haul enough to get from A-B and is new, he doesn’t care.

Oddly, a few of his trucks have had several NOS cans under the rear seat hooked up. The only Jalop thing about him and he only uses it to be that jackass lighting it up at a low speed up a hill just to reach double the limit and pass everyone.

I only used them once and got hell for it. I always drove up in a fully stock looking 2002 1500HD Silverado crew cab and the kids with the fox body’s, bro trucks and Integra’s mocked me. We had a huge empty lot in a nearby town that was used for racing... I showed up one night hoping that I’d show them. I won repeatedly but coming home with empty NOS bottles (50$ a bottle there) didn’t go over too well.

Even more odd are the number of cars he’s around. I’ve driven more than my fair share of rare cars and DD’d a few of them thanks to his clients or others where he just trades cars. Everything from an H2 to ‘02 C5 Z06.

The thing about English is that most of it is stolen from other languages. So if I had to guess we probably stole the word from France and you guys probably stole it from Spain or maybe they were just made up descriptions back in the day for cars, so you would have the Bentley Saloon and the Cadillac Sedan and the words became synonymous with 4 doors.

True, but I’m not really in the market for anything right now. I’ve got my 135is that I’m trying to get out of the lease , and my Grand Cherokee I plan on keeping for a while . I’ve got this crazy idea of trying to get a dealer to buy the 135is from me if I buy some other sports car that’s holding its value , which maybe I could try to do with this RX-7 that’s only a couple hours away from me . But really I just want to get down to driving only the Jeep for a while.

A sports car holding it’s value? I think what you want is something that has already experienced the majority of it’s depreciation curve and its either flat or starting to increase. An S2000 or F3DS RX7 fits that bill. Don’t buy a car as an investment...

Agreed, it makes the most sense to ride out the winter in 1 car and build some funds come summertime.

Apparently Saloon was a general term to describe a place of relaxation so naturally it was coined to describe larger more comfortable cars. Those cars more often than not would have 4 doors because any self respecting lord wouldn’t be sharing a door with “The Hired Help”.

Oh, I wouldn’t buy an FD or S2k as an investment, we’re on the same page there. More like something that’s fun and wouldn’t take a big depreciation hit.

The only reason I’m even entertaining the idea is as a roundabout way of getting out of my 135is lease. But really, the goal is to get down to 1 car, which is my Jeep. Even if I kept the 135is until the lease ends next June and then went to DD’ing my Jeep, my total cost would be way less than if I bought an FD or S2k now as a way of escaping the 135is.
